What is a Wiki?

PART 1 - Starting the wiki

By the end of this section you will:

  • have created your own wiki
  • be able to add new pages to it
  • be able to change colours and fonts
  • added ideas for using wikis in the classroom to a wiki page. You will find the link below.

SESSION 2 - adding things to your wiki
By the end of this session you will:
  • be able to embed videos in your wiki
  • be able to add images and files to your wiki
  • be able to link to other websites from your wiki
  • be introduced to 2 other Web 2.0 applications you can use with your wiki (TeacherTube and Slideshare)

SESSION 3 - Taking Chinese Away – creating mobile lessons for students using mp3 files and mp3 players


Once thing I have enjoyed doing is recording short lessons for my students that they can then listen to at their own pace. Here is where you can find the lessons I've created:

These videos will show you how to create files in Audacity. The content of the files is up to you! Things to consider when making audio lessons:
  • Keep it fairly short or the kids get confused with too many new words.
  • Encourage them throughout the lesson to speak out loud
  • Have plenty of pauses to give them chances to say the words
  • You can get them to respond by creating recordings of their own - either on the computer or with their phones!

To give your recorded lessons to your students you can:
  • upload them to your school network
  • upload them to several mp3 players and share them around the class
  • upload them to the internet for the students to download at home. To make your audio lessons available on the internet for your students, you can upload them to Podomatic. You will need to create an account, but it's free.

Here is another page I have created about podcasting on my blog, technoLanguages. It has these same videos, but also includes an introductory video about what podcasting is as well as lots of links to resources such as 'podsafe' music and 'sound loops' that you can include in your podcast once you get the hang of it.

REMEMBER - You can add these audio files to your wiki. It will automatically turn them in to a little player. Also, if you use Podomatic or something similar, you can embed a player into your wiki.

SESSION 4 - Drawing Characters Online – Screencasting


Screencasting is when you record what you are doing on your computer. Here are some examples of some screencasting that I did for my students, and some they did for me! Screencasting is a great way to assess character writing:




For this, I used the screen recording software that came with the interactive whiteboard that I had in my classroom. If you have an IWB, then you will have some sort of recorder that you can use for screencasting. If you don't have an IWB see if your school has some software that will do screencasting - a common one is called Camtasia Studio.

It is best to use an IWB or a tablet computer as that then allows you to draw the characters with a pen.
But, if all that fails, there is a free, online option for you. You will need to use two different applications:Scriblink (which we will use to draw characters) and Screentoaster (which we will use to record what we are drawing).

SESSION 5 - Recap and some more wiki features

1. Locate and sign in to your wiki
2. What did we learn how to do last time? Any questions about any of those aspects?
  • How have you used your wiki since?
  • Let's have some examples up on the screen!
  • What things have you found to be easy? difficult? Not worth the time?
3. Recap task - at the top of this page there is the 'Links to Wiki Ideas & Participants Wikis'. On this page, leave your name, your school, a link to your wiki and some ideas on how you are going to use your wiki and any other ideas you have. You can also take this time to try adding an image again, embed a video, or add another page to your wiki.
